You massive traitors!
12 . 01 . 25
Well, raise high the flag, I actually did it!
I bet you’re really excited to know about this big achievement, aren’t you? Drum roll please… I actually watched a TV programme. And not just one episode but TWO. And what’s more, I absolutely loved it!
Sorry if that disappointed you, it’s probably no great shakes to the majority of you to hear I’ve watched a TV programme. But trust me, in my household, it’s a subject of real delight, and let me tell you, for nobody more than me on this occasion.
You see, TV for me is something I just don’t really bother with. I’m not virtuous about it, I don’t see any problems with it. Everyone else in my house watches it. It’s just not something I make time to do. If I’m honest, I’m pretty disinterested in the majority of TV that’s on and prefer to spend my time doing other things.
But a very lovely client of mine, some time ago, told me about the programme Traitors and how she, her similar-aged children, and her husband absolutely love watching it together and she told me she know I’d love it too. So I wrote it down and thought, We’ll check that out at some point.
Now I realise we’re on Series 3, and I’m only just starting. And I’ve jumped straight in with Series 3 too, but it is ace isn’t it? I am officially IN. Hurrah.
It’s not just the programme that makes it so good though... For me, what that TV programme signifies is bigger - it’s family time, all together, all invested in the same thing, all getting really excited about it together. BEAUTS.
The funny thing is, there are a number of angles that I’ve noticed about why I’m loving it so much.
Actually, it goes right against my normal ‘no TV with tea rule’. I think having tea (I’m from Manchester - you might call it dinner) together is the one time of day when you actually all sit and talk. Even if we’re eating different food, and even if it’s sometimes (often) a little fragmented and eaten dead casually at the island, it’s a time we’re all in the kitchen at the same time, catching up together in our own little way.
But for Traitors, on both Friday and Saturday night this week (yes, I know, rock ‘n’ roll), we’ve sat in the lounge watching Traitors with tea on our knees. And it’s felt really, really special.
From a nervous system level, something I realise as I write this, is that one of my most special childhood memories is sitting in the playroom in our family home, having tea on our knees, watching The A-Team, just me and my mum and my big brother. That was during the times it was just the three of us, when my mum was single mumming (brilliantly might I add - thanks mum!). Those times always felt really special, really close, really together. That’s when my nervous system felt so safe, so regulated. It’s a time I always think of when I’m asked about happiest memories! Good old BA Baracus. Come to think of it, my husband drives a black Volkswagen Transporter… Hello A team van? I digress.
I realise that is the feeling I feel reproduced whilst watching Traitors together; that inside calm, safe feeling (nervous system regulation - the ventral vagal state), when I do this with my own family now. How lovely is that? My nervous system remembers and I’m bringing that regulation back with me into the room with my own family. Wiring together with them so they carry this feeling on too..
The actual programme itself includes loads of things I love too though, granted. It’s all about human behaviour, isn’t it? Relationship forming, how people behave under pressure, what people will do to win, the different types of people, the emotions, hearing people’s stories, hearing how they live their lives, hearing their passions and fears. I absolutely love it. Totally my thing.
And okay, the cherry on the cake is Claudia Winkleman. Her style is incredible on it (styled by Sinéad McKeefry as I’ve learned via the beauty of Insta). I love clothes, can’t help it, always have, make no apologies. She looks fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what she’s got on in the next episode already.
So I’m keeping this a little bit shorter (maybe?). Maybe I’m not making any of the big hitting points I usually like to make sure I hit for you, but I do think I’m making one really valuable one: feeling into what makes your nervous system feel happy. What feels special to you. Do that thing and do more of it, as much as you can.
Because I’ll tell you what, family time is worth more than anything in the world to me. That regulation, seeing my babies, my family, all together, cuddled up, just feeling so fortunate, so safe, so regulated, it’s special. You can’t buy that. You can only feel it. And that’s just so precious.
So, my little one is actually poorly this weekend so I’ve been heavy on mumming (a gift I’m grateful for), so I’m writing this really late. Actually I’m dictating it while walking on the treadmill, because I’ve not got out as much today as I’d hoped to.
A few wintry, slippy walks, yes, but I felt the need to move more. So that’s all I’m going to say today. I note gratefully I have still hit most of my main priorities today: movement, outdoors time, time with the fam, writing this to you lot, and so I sign off a very happy girl.
I hope you’ve done something that’s made you really happy today too?
