Contains passion - you won’t want to miss this one!

Yes, I prefer for you to get this on a Sunday morning but hey, mixing things up sometimes is never a bad thing and this one is definitely worth a good read and some afterthought.
I have fire coming out of my fingertips writing this one. Why? I’ve been listening to, and intermittently watching, a YouTube video of a 3-hour DJ set (DJ Marky, if you care to know) and I can confirm there is literally nothing that sets my soul on fire more than seeing someone totally in their passion. I mean, really living it, FEELING it, experiencing it, and properly buzzing (slightly mortified I’ve used that word, but can’t think of a suitable alternative) from it.
Watching people do their ‘thing’ brings me such absolute guttural joy. As for DJ Marky (seeing as though he’s prompted this email for today), I’ll set the scene. It’s just him, in a room, surrounded by a lifetime’s collection of vinyl, his decks, and space to dance while he plays. And dance he does! It’s joyous. Honestly, just watching that and listening to that music had me grinning like a Cheshire cat - feeling ALIVE. It got me thinking about all the times in my own life that I’ve properly enjoyed and felt absolutely full of passion and energy… and actually, I would describe the word as totally happy. What a JOY.
I absolutely love music, LOVE it. It takes me to places nothing else can. I know many of us feel the same, and live music, being in the same room as that passion, with other people sharing the same passion, is just INCREDIBLE.
Did you know, when we’re in a room full of people sharing the same passion, our nervous systems actually wire together? This synchronising effect, known as co-regulation, releases oxytocin and helps us feel calmer, more connected, and truly at ease. Yep. How lovely is that?
But passion is certainly not all about music. Passion is that undeniable force inside that drives you, the thing you can’t not do. It’s that unique energy you bring, and when you’re living it, people around you can feel it too. For me, it’s just seeing somebody in their passion, doing their thing, that really sets my soul on fire.
I see this passion all the time in my position as a Trustee for a grant-making charity foundation too, people running charities based on pure, unwavering passion and purpose. They are driven by something so real, so deep inside, so deeply personal that they just can’t stop, and it’s a beautiful thing to witness. When you are truly following your passion, you aren’t doing it for praise or recognition; you’re doing it because it’s who you are and what you believe in, deeply and entirely. And THIS is the thing I personally feel so deeply passionate about, helping people live in this way…
There are other times I feel this passion and fulfilment too, that massive deep connection and fire inside me, and I’ll tell you when it is. It’s when I’m in the presence of, or witness to, people willing to really show up exactly as they are, willing to be vulnerable. People who have real fears, real struggles, and dare to talk about them, to admit what they are struggling with, to share it, whilst still staying committed to keep moving forward. Why do you think they manage to keep going? Because I would dare to say there is always a passion driving them to do so. Whether it’s a passion for personal growth, to feel better, to perform, or to help others—when you’re connected to something that truly matters to you, I promise you, when you have passion for something, it conquers your fear every time.
Have a think about this… When you’re able to identify your own passions (and it can take work, sometimes lots), no matter how scared you feel, somehow if you allow it and keep ever so slightly pushing that comfort zone, you are showing your nervous system you’re safe. And when you keep stepping into your passion, even if you’re a little scared, it starts to feel safer and safer over time. It’s like giving your nervous system small doses of courage and permission to keep moving forward. Good hey?
Now, here’s something you need to understand too. A dysregulated nervous system can make it very hard to not only identify your own true passions but to then dare to fulfil them. I can’t bear the thought of people not experiencing their own passions in their one life. How sad would that be? That’s why I’m so passionate about the work I do, allowing people to access this. Because it is absolutely available to us all.
When our nervous system is dysregulated, it keeps us locked in survival mode, we are constantly looking out for threats, protecting ourselves, and living from a state of being ‘reactive’ rather than ‘proactive’. It can make it really challenging to connect with our true passions and, indeed, others. When we’re in this state, our nervous system is fixated on safety and survival, which blocks access to our deeper, more personal motivations, our true inner drives and core beliefs. This makes us more likely to choose our paths out of fear, routine, or obligation rather than genuine desire. So then, if that’s the case, where do we get that beautiful inner peace feeling we get from fulfilling our passions?
A regulated nervous system supports calm, clarity, and openness. In this state, we can truly ‘hear’ ourselves, our intuition, our dreams, and our real wants and needs. It’s sad, really, because when we’re stuck in survival mode, it’s like our true self is blocked, constantly looking out for ‘threats’. But with nervous system work, we can begin to shift this on a physiological level, creating space to finally connect with what we genuinely care about. This shift allows us to build lives that feel like ours, instead of simply surviving within them.
I cannot get the point across enough. We are here once, it’s not the practice run. Your life is your life. You are not here to serve anybody else unless that is your passion and what you want to do. You have the choice to make this life yours.
Yes, we have to pay bills, yes, we have to earn money, yes, we have responsibilities, but we can serve all those things while still serving our passion, if not as our main focus in life, certainly within our own lives.
Not until you feed your passion will you feel that true happiness, that inner peace, that calm we all seek. The recipe for happiness is enjoyment, meaning, and satisfaction, all those things are served when you follow and live your passions.
But what's important to note is that without doing the required work on your nervous system, all too often, this ‘database of experiences already held’ (your nervous system is just that) will hold you back. It will literally stop you doing things that are out of your ordinary life because your nervous system will feel it as unsafe… until you learn ways to show your nervous system it is safe.
So, in short (which these emails never are), if we work towards combining nervous system regulation work along with really getting to know who we are…Imagine what a wonderfully fulfilling, exciting life worth living that would be?
